Visit to the Botanical Gardens
Africa Avenue
This takes its name from its particularly favourable position. In fact, this is the sunniest part of the island enjoying temperatures that are up to 4 degrees higher than the north-facing part.
Camellia Plain
This corner of the garden takes its name from the beautiful espaliers of nineteenth century camellias, which begin to flower as early as January, that are found here. The Isola Madre Park was in fact, one of the first in Europe to house them.
The Hunchback's Field
The name of this field is due to the roots of the bald cypress that protrude evidently. In the upper part, beautiful arborescent Himalayan rhododendrons have found ideal conditions, to the extent that they have formed a wood, dotted with red in April.
Gynerium Lawn
The Pampas grass. In September, their tall, silver inflorescences, wave like silken pennants before the wind.
Parrot Square
A colony of Monaens Elic parrots live on the island and have even managed to nest here. The fields are home to white and blue peacocks, and to golden, venerated and silver pheasants. The island was once a hunting reserve and even Napoleon Bonaparte came here to hunt.
Cashmere Loggia
The ancient cypress that originates from Asia can be found here. It is the largest example in Europe and has green-blue, cascading foliage. A true rarity.
Chapel Square
The last great work undertaken in 1858 was the Family Chapel. It is very simple and only has some additional terracotta, in keeping with "Neo-Bramantine" or "Neo-Byzantine" style. It took 6 years to complete, and the work was carried out under the direction of the architect, Defendente Vanini.
Palm Avenue
Even though they are at a cold latitude, the palms sometimes even manage to produce fruit. Acclimatization of the palms has always been one of the main aims of this botanical garden, and in fact, it has a specimen that is 125 years old and is one of the tallest in Europe.
The Well Field
The trees and bushes in this field (cornel trees, magnolias, maple trees, laburnums etc.) are beautiful in spring thanks to their blossom but in autumn the colours of the leaves is even more impressive and enchanting.
